a post by Emilie Walsh

You have heard of 3D printing and wonder how it works? You would like to get the chance to design your own 3D models to print?

Come to our beginner workshop to learn about 3D modelling and 3D printing!

Next Thursday, the 15th of September, I will be teaching how to use the very accessible and free software, TinkerCAD, and once you have had a play with it for yourself, we’ll head to the Engineering Workshop to print a small model and see a 3D printer in action!

No Computer Aided Design experience required, all welcome!

Blog awards: August

Now that we’re comfortably in September (how!?), it’s time to announce the winners of our August blog awards!

1. “Tech Toy Library Applications Now Open!” by Vincent Khau
Do you like gadgets and cutting edge devices? We do too. We also love collaboration and open access. So we’ve started up a few small grants for researchers who want to expand their research with some tech toys. Vinnie explains further.

2. “Data in the Humanities and Social Sciences” By Kim Doyle
The Humanities and Social Sciences are too often excluded when we think data and digital tools. Not anymore. Here Kim shows the application of a variety of digital tools and how they dramatically help our HASS researchers.

3. “5 Ways I Wish Life Was Like MATLAB” By Kerry Halupka
In a completely unexpected turn, Kerry’s infamous love letter to MATLAB climbs into the top three a year after publication! This post doesn’t even need explaining. Read it now, because everyone else seems to have.
