Working in the research field usually means working with a lot of data. And working with data means that you’ll end up doing up doing one of these : data acquisition, data cleaning, data analysis, and data visualisation. If you’re thinking that doing one of those data stuffs is hard, then good news for you ! The Research Platforms Services will be doing a training on data acquisition and data cleaning during in end of November and early December 2015.

Back by popular demand, the data acquisition training series will take you through various ways on how researchers can get their data. In this instance, the training will talk about two ways into getting data : using web survey tools (Google Forms) and using mobile data collection tools (Kobo Toolbox).

The training will help you as a researcher in getting up a web survey containing various kinds of questions such as images, and videos. The training will also help you to learn the “advanced” features of Google Forms that you might not have tried such as form extension and data validation. Lastly, the if you have the need to do research that that involved fieldwork and getting data such as images, location, and videos, the training will help you to use Kobo Toolbox as a mobile data collection tool to do all of that in a easy and simple way :)

Interested ? The data acquisition training using survey tools and mobile data collection will be held on 30 November - 1 December 2015 1pm-3pm in the University of Melbourne. This training is free and open for everyone so book your place here ! : https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/data-acquisition-using-survey-tools-mobile-apps-registration-19527618633

After collecting your data, usually you want to go directly to analysing it but in a lot of cases you usually couldn’t. That’s because your data is messy and full of errors such as mistyped data, blank data, non numerical data in numeric data form, and more ! The data cleaning training will help you to easily identify, classify, and fix those messy data using an open source tool called Open Refine. You will learn from basic techniques to advanced techniques of Open Refine in this training that will surely help you in your journey of data-wrangling !

The data cleaning training using Open Refine will be held on 7 - 8 December 2015, 1pm-3pm in the University of Melbourne. It’s also free and open for everyone so don’t hesitate to join the training here ! : https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/data-cleaning-using-open-refine-registration-19527673798

Looking forward to see you in the training ! :)
